Aspen Police To Start Using Hybrid Cars

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ― Aspen Police say they will reduce their carbon footprint -- and save on rising fuel costs -- by replacing their SUV patrol cars with hybrids.

Police estimate the Toyota Highlanders they will start using over the next few months will increase fuel efficiency and decrease carbon emissions in the city by 20 tons annually.

The city currently uses 11 Volvo SUVs that get about 11 miles per gallon. Highlanders get about 26 miles per gallon but police expect the vehicles to get between 16 to 19 miles per gallon once they're loaded with police equipment.

Police say the move will save the city about $7,000 in gas annually.

Police bought their first Highlander in March to test it. They found that its battery died several times when outfitted with police equipment. They will use two batteries to fix the problem.
