Winning Louisville Teen Shares Whirlwind Journey

DENVER (CBS4) ― For the first time a Colorado competitor is wearing the crown as Miss Teen USA. Hilary Cruz won the pageant in August and is settling into her new home in New York City.

The Miss Teen Colorado pageant was the first the 18 year old had ever entered.

"I was kind of an actress and artsy, so this was something I thought would be fun," Cruz told CBS4 Weekend Morning anchors Ericka Lewis and Arturo Santiago Saturday.

"This was something I thought would be fun and it made sense with who I was. So I entered on a whim but I guess it was just meant to be."

Since winning the title, Cruz has been on a whirlwind tour visiting Spain, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where she attended the VMA Awards.

Now she's back at her new home in New York City where she is rooming with Miss USA and Miss Universe.

"We're all so different so we make such a great group."

And Cruz showed all the poise which won her the pageant when asked about Miss South Carolina, who fumbled a question about geography and ended up all over the Internet.

"That whole experience is so nerve wracking," Cruz said. " We're in front of this whole panel of judges, in front of our families and oh yeah, we're on TV. That was one answer to one question. She's a cool girl and good for her that she laughs at herself with everyone else."

Right now Cruz is settling into her life in New York City, but the girl from Louisville is happy to have some company, for now.

"My mom is in town so I'm showing her around New York. We're exploring together."
