Mayor Tracks Steps During Busiest Week Of His Life

Life Doesn't Slow Down For Hickenlooper During The DNC

 Section: Democratic National Convention Section

DENVER (CBS4) ― When you're the mayor of the Democratic National Convention's host city you've got your hands full.

Mayor John Hickenlooper isn't sleeping much these days, but he was counting his steps when CBS4 caught up with him on Wednesday.

"Yesterday I had 13,000 steps," said Hickenlooper, consulting his pedometer. "Today we're only at 5,000 steps but we're only at noon so it'll be a long day today as well."

Few people have been as busy this week as the mayor. From luncheons to receptions and concerts to the convention floor, the mayor has been on the move.

"We've done 8 interviews already today ... we've done three of the Rocky Mountain roundtables. We're trying to get out to the American Presidential Experience. We haven't gotten there."

Throughout the long days of what is surely the busiest week of his life Hickenlooper has had one main message.

"I get the great privilege of welcoming you all to our great city in the Rocky Mountain West," he told some visitors on Wednesday.

During his 3 minute speech to the convention delegates on Monday Hickenlooper set the tone for the entire convention. He said it wasn't hard trying to find the right things to say.

"I really (had) kind of a narrow assignment, right? I've got to welcome people, create that tone of what the West means and how excited we are to have everyone here," he said.

Like his speech, his time at any one place with any one person is meager, but he works to make it meaningful, pushing his political plan for progress.

"We shouldn't just be talking about cities anymore, right? We need to be talking about metropolitan regions and the alliances (like the one with) Mayor Ed Tauer in Aurora and myself and Mayor Bob Murphy in Lakewood. The way we're all trying to solve our problems as a group rather than individually. I think that's what the country's got to do."

After the convention wraps up Thursday night Hickenlooper said he's going to celebrate by getting some good sleep.
