Hickenlooper Welcomes DNC Crowd To 'New West'

 Section: Democratic National Convention Section

DENVER (CBS4) ― Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper praised Barack Obama's promise to bring change to America during his Monday afternoon address at the Democratic National Convention.

Hickenlooper said "we're all in this together" and that Denver will be remembered as the place where it all began for Obama's bid to become the country's first black president.

The mayor welcomed the Pepsi Center crowd to what he called the "New West." He said the area is revitalized because of a collaboration of pro-business and pro-environmental efforts.

He also told the delegates you can't embrace the future without change.

"That future starts here in Denver. That future starts now in Denver and that future starts with Barack Obama as the next president of the United States."

Hickenlooper spent the day Monday meeting and greeting people to his city. That included mayors in town for the United States Conference of Mayors.

Miami's mayor Manny Diaz was among those who praised Hickenlooper.

"In our country, whenever there is a major event in America there's always a mayor in that city that takes care of puting together that event, so congratulations John on a great job," Diaz said.

Hickenlooper said he not only feels people responding to Denver; he's also hearing it.

"The greatest thing, people are coming into this city and they're saying 'Wow, I had no idea. I want to come back. I want to bring my family out here. The city is so clean. The people are so friendly.'"

Earlier in the day Monday he said on CBS4 that he hopes business people will consider opening offices here and that he hopes the event will provide a major tourism boost.

"What I'm hoping is people will see the mountains and 300 days of sunshine, people working hard and playing hard ... they get up earlier on the weekends than they do on the weekdays," Hickenlooper said.

He also said having the convention in Denver "raises us up and gives us a higher profile."
