Military helicopters took over the Denver skies Thursday for a disaster drill.
The helicopters from Buckley Air Force Base were part of an exercise that involves the Colorado Army National Guard. The guard is testing how they would respond in the case of a biological, chemical or nuclear attack.
"They're going to react to this mission just the same as the active component," said Capt. Michael Odgers.
The training involves mock emergencies at many of the region's municipal and general aviation airports.
Volunteers with the Civil Air Patrol were staging some kind of disaster scene that would include mock victims who would be airlifted to hospitals throughout the Denver metro area.
The exercise also used the Pepsi Center as a training scene.
The training is similar to the week-long exercise that took place in June of last year. That training took place a few weeks before the Democratic National Convention.
Last year the military helicopters took off and landed at area hospitals, surprising residents.
City leaders and the military admitted they made a mistake by not warning the public about the exercise beforehand.
This time the city and military wanted to make sure they announced the details of the exercise ahead of time.
