Dozens of young volunteers with a Colorado based AmeriCorps group left Denver Thursday morning to help the Red Cross at shelters along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Gustav.
The 47 men and women have trained to help run shelters.
"Back in February, we went through a month of training," said Carly Colgan. "We went through mass care training and shelter training."
They left Denver International Airport on two flights for Baton Rouge, La.
AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, residential, national service program in which 1,100 young adults serve nationwide each year.
The Central Region campus in Denver is one of three regional hubs in the United States and serves 15 states in the central part of the country. The other campuses are located in Perry Point, Md., and Sacramento, Calif.
In exchange for their service, corps members receive $4,725 to help pay for college, or to pay back existing student loans.
