Group Runs To Make Life Changes

DENVER (CBS4) ― A group of runners at the 20th annual Runnin' of the Green in downtown Denver Sunday were racing to battle for something more than a record time. The members were trying to overcome homelessness and addiction.

The group is from the Denver Rescue Mission's New Life Program and the Urban Peak's Up and Running Program. The members were recruited by the Activity Inspired Rehabilitation (AIR) Foundation.

The runners are taught how to set incremental goals, like going a mile, then two and then five.

"And it really shows out that the guys who stick with the program, that really engage in the process, begin to naturally understand what that means in their everyday life," said Nick Sterner of the AIR Foundation.

The physical training starts to become something they lean on.

"I get this huge adrenalin rush and adrenalin high that just really helps me to overcome whatever it is that I can't deal with at the time," said Taylor Stewart or Urban Peak.

The group was led by a blind runner on Sunday. He served as their inspiration for the day.

"There's no better drug in terms of anti-depressants, or recreational or anything like that than the high, the endorphins you get off of running," said Kerry Kuck, the blind runner.

The AIR Foundation is a Colorado-based non-profit.

Many of its runners Sunday are training for the Colorado Colfax Marathon in May.
