Meet First In Family Ever To Graduate High School

Written by Michelle Griego
DENVER (CBS4) ― Tomas Garcia accomplished something no one in his family has ever done. On Saturday, he graduated from the Denver School of Science and Technology (DSST) with the hope of becoming an architect.

"He's the first one in our family to graduate and go to college," said Alejandra Garcia, Tomas' sister.

Tomas is the youngest of six children and his family moved to Colorado from California in 1997. His parents know it's been a long road with hours of homework. Sometimes, Tomas has even stayed after school to finish it.

"This school's really hard but it prepared me for the future," Tomas said.

In his junior year, Tomas started interning at Klipp Architecture as part of the ACE mentor program. ACE is an acronym for architecture, construction and engineering and works to integrate students with professionals. Tomas spent much time studying building models and designs.

Tomas' mentor, Sam Miller, says he sees a future architect in his protégé.

"He has a good sense of design and you can see the potential," Miller said.

Now with a diploma in hand and a scholarship, Tomas has the ticket to a bright future and his 15 nieces and nephews have someone to look up to.

"Now they're talking about going to college," Tomas said. "At first we didn't even think about going to college, but now it's become a reality."

Tomas will go on to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque to study architecture. All 78 graduates in his class were accepted to 4-year institutions.
