First Lady Starts Fund For Governor's Mansion

DENVER (CBS4) ― Colorado First Lady Jeannie Ritter is starting a private fund to help preserve the Governor's Mansion, which turns 100-years-old this year.

"What I wanted to do in creating this fund was be able to offset some costs and have folks who wouldn't traditionally have access to the mansion have them be able to create and experience here and form a relationship," Ritter said.

The Governor's Residence Preservation Fund hopes to endow $10 million during 10 years for future work on the Governor's Residence at the Boettcher Mansion.

The State Legislature approved funding in 2004 at Gov. Bill Owens' request so the mansion's carriage house could be repaired.

Ritter said the private fund will hold money to help repair future cracks and creaks in the mansion.

The 25,000 square-foot mansion was built in 1908 and given to the state in 1959.

The state budget has money for routine maintenance, major renovations can only be done if extra money is acquired.
