Fruitvale Duplex Fire Damage Estimated At $100,000
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) ―
A blaze that heavily damaged a Fruitvale duplex is being blamed on a 5-year-old boy who authorities say set a bed on fire.
Four children, including the young boy, escaped injury after the fire broke out about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. A fifth child was already outside.
Their mother was not home at the time.
The fire was contained to a bedroom, but the rest of the unit sustained significant heat and smoke damage. Grand Junction Fire Department spokesman Mike Page says damage to the unit and its contents is estimated at $100,000.
The American Red Cross has placed the Guerrero family in a hotel for three days. Relatives and neighbors say also say they plan to help the family.
Fourteen-year-old Alondra Guerrero says the family now has nothing.
