Fort Collins Tries To Attract More To 'Midtown'

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ― Fort Collins is working to make something special out of what's now being called "Midtown." The corridor runs along College Ave. for three miles between Prospect Rd. and Harmony Rd.

The long stretch of retail areas includes some older strip-mall shopping centers, car dealerships, big box stores, and other areas that have been renovated and look new.

The Foothills Mall is one of the big concerns for city leaders. It was the focus of a consultant's report to the city during a meeting Wednesday. One two of four anchor positions are occupied, Macy's and Sears.

The city's consultant said the mall needs to attract another anchor and be renovated, or needs to be rebuilt as an outdoor shopping area. The mall owner, General Growth Properties, is currently working through bankruptcy.

The mayor of Fort Collins said the Foothills Mall is the city's number one economic priority.

p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; } "What could be is to have a revitalized mall with a surrounding revitalization of economic activity that could be a great spot for Fort Collins. The city can't create jobs or do economic health directly, but we can be a catalyst for that," said Fort Collins Mayor Doug Hutchinson.

The area includes the Mason Street Corridor just to the west of College Ave., which the city is turning into a multi-mode transportation corridor that is expected to help rejuvenate that part of town.

"We can create an environment where business and entrepreneurs can succeed. And if you look at what we're doing here, that's exactly what we're doing, and it's the right thing to do," said Hutchinson.

The city council hopes to have a final vision plan for Midtown approved in May.
