Seniors Fight To Keep Flower Gardens

MILLIKEN, Colo. (CBS4) ― Residents from a senior housing neighborhood in the town of Milliken have a fight on their hands. They're trying to save flower gardens after the housing authority told them they didn't have permission to plant them. So they decided to protest.

The protesting residents at Dove Valley Senior Housing say they wilted when they heard what would happen June 3 to the flower gardens many have planted in front of their rented townhomes.

"There will be men there to either dig them up or spray them so they'll die," resident Maxine Bury said.

"Everybody was just devastated," resident Grace Chase said. "The little lady that lives right there; she was just in tears, and I was too mad, but when I came home I cried."

Many dug up their plants and put them in pots.

"I'm hoping that there's a middle ground there," said Moofie Miller, Housing Authority of Loveland Director, who manages the property.

Miller says the flowers are on common area, not private property. She acknowledged that rules and regulations can be extremely frustrating.

"On the other hand we do need a certain standard to maintain the integrity of our property, just because people do have different views of beautiful," Miller said. "We're really going to work on a strong resolution."

Residents are hopeful that the demonstration has bought a little more time for the gardens they've planted.

"I think flowers are the prettiest things in the garden in front of your door, your house, resident Stephanie Mondragon said.

Miller says she hopes the residents will be able to plant flowers.
