Fitz-Gerald Gets Top Billing Over Polis In Primary

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (AP) ― Democrats Joan Fitz-Gerald and Jared Polis earned enough votes to get on the August primary ballot to replace Colorado congressman Mark Udall.

Former state Sen. Joan Fitz-Gerald will have the top line on the ballot over Polis after getting 60.1 percent of the vote at the 2nd Congressional District Assembly and Convention Saturday. Polis got 39.9 percent of the vote.

Both want Udall's job. He's running for U.S. Senate.

Fitz-Gerald was the first woman to be elected president of the Colorado senate. She resigned in November to focus on her campaign.

Polis helped create the voter-approved Amendment 41, which bans lawmakers from accepting gifts from lobbyists or gifts of more than $50 from anyone.

Democrat Will Shafroth is trying to petition his way onto the ballot of the Aug. 12 primary.
