Fiddle Championships Preserve American Heritage
DENVER (CBS4) ―
It's a unique type of music that went hand-in-hand with pioneers exploring and settling in the West. Fiddling is called one of the oldest art forms and part of American heritage.
The 7th Annual Colorado Fiddle Championships at the National Western Stock Show is one way of trying to preserve that heritage and promote the music.
This year there were more contestants than ever before -- nearly 100. The contestants had to play different types of music for the judges.
Fiddling can vary in style from hoedowns and waltzes, to ragtime and polkas. The players don't use sheet music -- they play from memory. Some of the experts improvise from there. They all say getting together and playing with friends is the best part -- a release.
"I like music a lot and it's really helpful to me when I'm having not such a great day to take it all out on this," fiddler Celeste Johnson said. "I especially like this instrument and this style."
The competition was put on by the Colorado Old Time Fiddler's Association, a non-profit dedicated to promoting this music.
