Springs Law Enforcement Gets $1.9M In Stimulus

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ― The El Paso County Sheriff's Department and Colorado Springs police are getting $1.9 million in federal stimulus money.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said the $620,000 his department is getting will buy 21 computers and 34 radar systems for deputies' vehicles and an online reporting system. The money will also be used to replace Tasers and safety vests and for a system to monitor jail visitors.

Nearly half of Colorado Springs police department's $1.3 million will go toward a records management system. Police spokesman Lt. David Whitlock says the department also plans to hire four community service officers and extend a contract for a grant writer for another three years.
