Researchers at the University of Colorado Denver are looking for women who want liposuction surgery. They're studying the way the body distributes fat.
"We're studying pre- and post-menopausal women who have a propensity
to store fat on their hips and thighs," said Rachel Van Pelt, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver.
"The interesting thing about this study is that researchers are using liposuction to help them determine how the body distributes dietary fat, the fat you eat at a meal," said CBS4 Medical Editor Dr. Dave Hnida.
Donna Portman, 50, spent the night in the hospital. It's part of her commitment to being a part of the study.
"You need a full day to do all the tests that need to be done because this is the critical information that's going into the study," Portman told CBS4.
The study focuses on pre- and post-menopausal women. Researchers want to know how fat absorption changes as the body changes.
"This is really going to give us some insight into how dietary fat, that is the fat that we eat after a meal, is handled," said Van Pelt.
Half the women in the study will get Liposuction surgery, which will help researchers further understand fat distribution.
"Liposuction gives us a way to then study whether fat metabolism is changed when fat is removed from the lower body," Van Pelt added.
The key will be to see what role estrogen plays in this process, but for Donna Portman this is a lesson in how her body works.
"I think, from this study, I'm going to gleen some really good information that I'm going to be able to use for the next 20-30 years," Portman added.
"It's long been thought that women who store fat in their thighs are healthier than women who hold fat around their middle. This study will add to our information on that," Hnida added.
This study is in the beginning stages, researchers are looking for participants, but you should know that if you get the liposuction surgery as part of the study you'll have to pay for it out-of-pocket.
