Children's Hospital Embraces Electronic Records

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ― No more paper charts at Children's Hospital. It's all rolled in on mobile computers.

If they had any previous allergies, the computer would let health care providers know.

"Also any previous medicines they've been on or surgeries," said Cheryl Stiles with Children's Hospital. "We have all of that at our fingertips. From my perspective you've got all the pieces to a puzzle."

Electronic records allow everyone involved in a patient's care to have all the information at the same time.

"All the other industries are already on computers," said Dr. David Kaplan. "It's taken medicine a long time to get to where we are now."

With easier access, comes the issue of patient privacy, something Kaplan says is protected by passwords and authorization.

"They just can't get into the other hospitals record and start looking around," Kaplan said.

For Children's Hospital electronic records are working so well they're planning to expand the system to other Colorado Hospitals.

"We're thrilled," says Stiles. "We can't imagine now life without electronic medical records."
