E. Coli Blamed For Death Of Child In Denver Area

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4/AP) ― Health officials say a 3-year-old boy from the Denver area died from an E. coli infection on Friday. Investigators were working to determine the source of the bacteria on Monday.

It's not clear where he lived but the investigation is being handled by the Tri-County Health Department, which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. The boy did attend a home day care in Arapahoe County with about a dozen other children.

Investigators were meeting with parents and testing children who may have ad contact with the boy.

"Some of them may have started to exhibit symptoms, but we're not sure if they're related or if it's a separate thing, we're trying to sort it out," said Dr. Tista Ghosh of the Tri-County Health Department.

The health department has not said if the boy had any siblings or if any of the children at the day care attended area schools.

"We do not believe it is something that is community wide," said Bruce Wilson, the health department's director. "We believe it is narrowly focused but we need more information to be able to confirm that."

Investigators haven't said exactly where the day care is located. CBS4 learned the facility is not licensed and the state plans to issue a cease and desist order.
