An ex-Marine and Hurricane Katrina evacuee has been sentenced to life in prison without parole in the shooting death of a 62-year-old woman in a Denver suburb.
John Doubleday was sentenced Friday. He was convicted in August of second-degree murder and felony murder.
"Of course that's what we expected," said Carol Chambers, Arapahoe County District Attorney. "I think this is a day Jutte Gallegos, who was working the night shift in a 7-Eleven, making an honest living, has gotten a little bit of justice and her family has gotten a little bit of justice."
Prosecutors say Doubleday killed Gallegos Burton during a December 2006 robbery at a 7-Eleven in the eastern suburb of Denver.
During his trial in August, Doubleday insisted he did not intentionally shoot Gallegos. He said he committed the robbery in order to repay a drug debt.
Police say Doubleday and his girlfriend came to Colorado in the evacuation of the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005.
Doubleday was in a drug treatment program in the Golf Coast when Katrina hit. He was kicked out of the Marines for bad conduct.
