11-Year-Old Broomfield Boy Looks For Marrow Donor

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) ― In the month of November there's a way to help stop hunger and save lives. Bring a can of food to any Bonfils Blood Center and then register to become a marrow donor.

In this ailing economy, food donations are needed more than ever and each year thousands of people are diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma, diseases that could be cured with a marrow transplant.

One of those people is Kyle Lindgren. The 11 year old has spent about half of his life fighting leukemia.

"It's really hard after a while," Kyle said.

CBS4's Kathy Walsh first met Kyle in 2005 while in treatment at The Children's Hospital. He had been diagnosed at 3 years old.

After three years of chemotherapy, the blood cancer went into remission. But four years later it was back. Kyle responded well to treatment again.

"He was showing no signs of being sick -- no nothing," said Denise Lindgren, Kyle's mother.

But last month there was another relapse. So once again Kyle was hooked up for chemotherapy and hopeful.

"This time we're going to have a bone marrow transplant in January, hopefully," Denise said.

Kyle's parents and none of his siblings are a match, so doctors are now searching the National Marrow Registry.

People who love Kyle are asking for the public's help.

"To save a life -- anybody's life -- I mean there could be somebody out there looking for you," Denise said.

Next Monday, Westlake Middle School in Broomfield, where Kyle goes to school, will host a marrow donor recruitment drive.

Those who would like to help should bring a non-perishable food item for the Food Bank of the Rockies and have a cheek swabbed to get on the marrow registry.

Those who can't make it to the marrow drive can bring the food item to any Bonfils Blood Center and donate blood. They'll collect a little extra blood for the marrow registry.
