Web Site Saves Death Row Dogs

Written for the Web by CBS4 Special Projects Producer Libby Smith

PALMER LAKE, Colo (CBS4) ― At the Sundance Boarding Kennel in Palmer Lake, most of the residents are there on vacation, while their families take some time away. When owner, Suzi Gordon, has room in her kennel she looks for dogs she can save.

"There's usually a home for everyone," Gordon told CBS4.

Gordon is a regular on the Web site dogsindanger.com, which is dedicated to finding homes for dogs that may otherwise be euthanized.

"I just think they all should get a second chance if they can," Gordon added.

She's given a second chance to 15 dogs from Colorado shelters.

"They could have been dead, but instead they're in wholesome, very good homes," Gordon added.

A handful of Colorado shelters use the site, but few from the Denver metro area. The Metro Denver Shelters Alliance was approached about working with dogsindanger.com, but decided not to.

"We do appreciate the idea behind it. It's just it didn't feel like a good fit for the Alliance as a whole," said Alliance spokesperson, Michaela DeGraw.

The 23 members of the Metro Denver Shelter Alliance work together to make sure as many animals as possible get adopted. They have a transfer program that allows the shelters to move animals for maximum adoption potential. DeGraw said that the Alliance objects to some of the wording on the dogsindanger.com Web site.

"We like to stay away from the 'no kill' language because if you say 'no kill' that assumes 'kill' as the opposite of that," DeGraw explained.

The dogsindanger.com Web site was established in 2007. It claims to have saved more than 21,000 dogs nationwide.
