A jury in Arvada will decide if a German shepherd should be put to death for attacking a woman and her son in August.
Laura Hagan owns five-year-old Rolo. He got away from her and attacked Kathy Hardin and her one-year-old son.
After the attack, a city judge ruled Rolo should be destroyed, especially after neighbors of Hardin said Rolo was dangerous. Hagan disagreed, saying "I don't think two scratches justify death."
Rolo is currently being held at the Table Mountain Animal Center and Hagan tries to visit him every day. She also spends time on a corner in Old Towne Arvada waving signs to get support for her efforts to free Rolo. She has even set up a Web site to help pay for the costs of attorneys.
Hagan said she is determined to fight for Rolo's freedom.
"These are my kids. I'm for Rolo, who has no voice in this matter, so I have to stick up for him," Hagan said. "He would die for me. I feel like I at least owe him that."
A jury of six will hear the case against Rolo and Hagan on Jan. 11. If they are found not guilty, Hagan will be able to take the dog home. If they are convicted, a judge will determine Rolo's fate the following Monday.
Hagan said she is willing to pay restitution and apologize to Hardin.
