Man Indicted Over Threat On Northwest Flight

DENVER (AP) ― A grand jury has indicted a Lafayette man accused of falsely telling another passenger on a Northwest Airlines flight that he had an explosive in his luggage.

Fifty-six-year-old Mark Randall Rayborn appeared Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Denver on a charge of making false threats aboard an aircraft. He will be represented by a federal public defender. It was unclear whether one had been appointed Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Rayborn's alleged statement on Northwest Flight 552 from Denver to Minneapolis on Sept. 27 caused the plane to be towed from the terminal and searched. About 140 people on board had to go through security screening again.

If convicted, Rayborn faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
