Denver Students Line Up For 'Lettuce Lounge'

Students at Brown International Academy in northwest Denver are enjoying healthier options during school lunches.

They're lining up for what's called the "Lettuce Lounge", a salad bar in the school's cafeteria.

"I had a couple salads just the past few weeks and it tasted, like, awesome," said one student.

Students can choose vegetables including greens, cucumbers, peppers and califlower.

Two moms, Karen Sorensen and Gina O'Brian, were on a nutrition mission to get the salad bar concept approved by school officials.

"Fruits and vegetables are very important," said O'Brian.

"It takes a while to change habits and that's what we're out to try to do," said Sorensen.

The pair got Denver Public Schools on board and unveiled the new salad bar in March.

"Before we got the Lettuce Lounge I didn't really eat a lot of vegetables because I didn't really like the ones they were giving us," said Skyler Arterbura, student.

A Denver Public Schools spokesperson said if students use the "Lettuce Lounge", it may spread the concept of a salad bar to other schools.
