The Denver Public School's Board has selected a Stanford Law School graduate and former Hong Kong English teacher as the finalist to replace the Senate-bound Michael Bennet as the district's superintendent.
The announcement of 44-year-old Tom Boasberg as finalist came Tuesday evening. The superintendent spot became open last week after Gov. Bill Ritter chose Bennet to replace Sen. Ken Salazar, who was nominated as U.S. Interior secretary by President-elect Barack Obama.
Bennet introduced Boasberg at a news conference Thursday.
Boasberg has been the district's chief operating officer since May 2007. He has previously worked in K-12 education and was a junior high-school English teacher in Hong Kong, where he was a semi-pro basketball player.
"Are we increasing the proficiency of our kids in reading, in writing, in math?" Boasberg said Thursday evening at the announcement of his position as finalist. "Are we increasing our graduation rates? Are we increasing our college enrollment, and are we closing the achievement gap?"
Before joining DPS, Boasberg worked at Broomfield-based Level 3 Communications.
Rules require the board to wait 14 days before formally voting on Boasberg's position. That vote is expected to happen Jan. 22.
