Mayor Reassures DPD Officers: 'We're Behind You'
Written by Brian Maass
DENVER (CBS4) ―
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and a phalanx of top city law enforcement officials met with rank and file Denver police officers Thursday to thank them for their work leading up to next week's Democratic National Convention and to give front line officers a vote of confidence.
"They need to know we support them 100 percent, we trust they are going to make the right decisions out there," Hickenlooper said after emerging from the hour-long meeting, which was not open to the press.
It appeared several hundred officers attended the gathering held at the Denver Police Protective Association headquarters in west Denver. Attendees described it as positive.
Hickenlooper was asked if officers are "worried" about what may happen next week, with between 20,000 to 50,000 protestors expected to mass in Denver.
"I think not worried but uncertain," Hickenlooper said. "They haven't been in this situation before."
However, he said their command staff has been involved in massive, high profile events like the 1993 visit of the Pope to Denver and a summit of world leaders held in Denver in 1997.
The department has brought in police authorities from other juridstictions to share their experiences with handling political conventions and other major events in preparation for the event. Additonally, Police Chief Gerry Whitman said some of his officers have made "site visits" to other cities.
Hickenlooper said "we are as ready as we can be for any eventuality." His manager of safety, Al Lacabe, said "It's one of those things where you prepare, prepare, prepare -- now it's time to play the game."
