Colorado runners took two of the top spots at the 4th Annual Denver Marathon. For the majority of the 10,000 runners finishing was accomplishment enough.
Matt Levassuir from Alamosa won the half-marathon for the men. Peris Chumba was the women's winner.
Chris Siemers of Arvada won the full-marathon for the men. It was his fourth marathon.
"This is by far my biggest accomplishment," Siemers told CBS4.
On the women's side, Holly McIlvaine came in first. This was her first time running the Denver Marathon and she particularly liked the course.
"Little bit of hills ... little bit of down ... flat
so yeah
shade, so that was helpful. Running through the park, I really like Washington Park. That was gorgeous," McIlvaine said.
The course wound through downtown Denver and through City Park, Cheesman Park and Washington Park. At some points along the way, runners got a preview of what next year's race will be like when it becomes the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon. There were occasional bands and themed cheer teams. As a Rock 'n' Roll race, the Denver Marathon will have bands along every mile with a headline act at the post-event concert.
At the finish, thousands of runners accomplished their goal by just making across the line.
"I feel awesome. I did it. I got 13.1 miles," said Kim Ferguson, a first time half-marathoner.
Ferguson has lost 140 pounds in the last 18 months. She decided to run the half-marathon as she changed her focus from limiting her eating to expanding her exercise abilities.
"I feel like since I did this, I can do anything. I can accomplish any goal," Ferguson added.
Her next goal will be a full-marathon, but more importantly she wants to continue the healthy changes she's made to her life.
"I want to continue on this route because I want to have my lifestyle changed that's what's most important to me. So that's why I did it and that's why I'm going to continue on doing it."
