Proud Firefighters Talk Of Library Baby Delivery

DENVER (CBS4) ― Overdue books are nothing new for a library, but on Tuesday morning the staff at Denver's public library downtown had to deal with something arriving early -- a baby that just couldn't wait to make her debut.

Celeste Jackson, Denver Public Library spokeswoman, said a new slogan could possibly be in the works for the library.

"Any time we can help, Denver Public Library delivers," she joked.

She's not kidding. About an hour before the library opened to the public a pregnant woman entered through the front door in labor. Her water had already broken.

Her delivery room was right in the breezeway behind the security desk.

Security called 911 and within minutes Denver firefighters arrived.

"When they say they're going to have a baby -- you've got to take it seriously," firefighter Randall Wells told CBS4.

Not doubting a woman in labor, Wells and other firefighters including Mark Butler, Mark Rudolph and Greg Sheehan grabbed their disposable obstetrical kit.

"She was ready to have that baby," Butler and Rudolph said.

The library staff pitched in, putting up a black curtain, and firefighters went to work.

"It happened a little quicker than we all thought it would, but it turned out to be awesome," Wells said.

"Mom did great. For being on the stone floor of the library she did a great job," Rudolph said.

Within 5 minutes a baby girl was born.

The joy of a newborn has the delivery team proud.

"It was a very positive call," Mark Butler said.

"It was a great chance to have a good impact on somebody's life," Rudolph said.

"It's very exciting to see a new life come into the world," Sheehan said.

As for the library -- there's never a better time to send a positive message.

"It's never too early to start reading," Jackson said.

Apparently this pregnant woman was on an RTD bus and got off at the library. She was scheduled to talk to reporters on Wednesday morning at the hospital about the delivery. So far she hasn't been identified.
