Neighbors Convince City To Change Fire Truck Route

DENVER (CBS4) ― Neighbors in a south Denver neighborhood said they didn't like the noise from fire trucks, so they petitioned the mayor to have the trucks take a different route to emergency calls.

Since then, the fire chief has ordered the trucks at Station 19 at Alameda and Ivy to change their initial routes.

The trucks had regularly been going south on Ivy Street and through a residential area. Now they are directed to go only to the north and onto the busy Alameda.

Some firefighters at Station 19 told CBS4 that the new route could increase response time, particularly during rush hour, but Alex Paez, Denver Fire Department's public information officer, says firefighters do have some discretion.

"If an emergency should arise in that general vicinity, we still have a duty to provide service to the general vicinity around that area, and we will still respond and utilize the fastest route," Paez told CBS4.

Neighborhood association president Reuben Drebenstedt lives on South Ivy and said they have been trying to get the route adjusted for a long time. He said the trucks go too fast, are too loud and have been responding to incidents too frequently.

"We don't hate the firemen. We really respect them and honor them, we just wanted a little more respect for our neighborhood and our children," Drebenstedt said.

Lynn Hammond lives on Holly, a road which will see more fire truck traffic with the new directive, and said she thinks the route adjustment sets a bad precedent.

"It might become a real issue for the city to make these decisions," she said.

Both the Denver Fire Department and the mayor say this change was a special circumstance and any similar requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
