Convention Protest Groups Split From Coalition

Section: Denver 2008 DNC Convention Section

DENVER (CBS4) ―

At least nine groups planning demonstrations during the Democratic convention in Denver have pulled out of an umbrella protest organization, citing concerns about its rhetoric and tactics.

One of the breakaway groups, called Tent State University, is citing concerns that the umbrella group's statement of nonviolence doesn't go far enough.

But Tent State says it doesn't believe the umbrella group, called Re-create 68, is planning violence.

Some of the breakaway groups have formed a new coalition called Alliance for Real Democracy.

Glenn Spagnuolo of Re-create 68 says he is not troubled by the emergence of the new group. He says both groups oppose the war in Iraq, and neither advocates violence.

The convention will be Aug. 25-28.
