Gov. Bill Ritter plans to ask legislators to make more money available to feed thousands of wildlife facing starvation in deep snow and subzero temperatures.
Colorado wildlife employees and volunteers last week launched a massive effort to feed thousands of mule deer in western Colorado struggling in snow up to 4 feet deep and temperatures as cold as minus-26 degrees.
Ritter plans to ask the Legislature's Joint Budget Committee on Monday for spending authority for $1.75 million for the winter feeding program, on top of $250,000 already available.
Wildlife officials say that without the emergency feeding program, herds could shrink by half, affecting communities whose economies depend on hunting.
