EPA Adds Creede Mining Site To Superfund List

CREEDE, Colo. (AP) ― The Environmental Protection Agency has added an abandoned mining site north of Creede to the Superfund list, making it eligible for extensive cleanup.

The designation, announced Wednesday, allows the use of federal funds to mitigate the site and lets the EPA try to recover costs from responsible parties.

The site includes a tunnel blamed for allowing cadmium, lead and zinc in the Willow Creek watershed, killing fish, and a waste-rock pile that could send contaminated water into the creek if a damaged drainage system fails.

Officials are exploring whether they can limit the amount of water flowing into the tunnel, which would reduce the amount of contaminated water coming out.

Plans for the waste pile could include enlarging drainage channels to divert more runoff.
