The Colorado Division of Wildlife is warning pet owners about several coyote attacks in the Denver area, including one just this week at Cherry Creek State Park. Experts said the wild animals are looking for easy meals in backyards and in dog parks.
Miriam Reed said a coyote attacked her two dogs at Cherry Creek recently. A coyote crept up behind her and took her dog, leash and all.
"There's no warnings, nothing here to tell a dog owner if your dogs less than size of a German shepherd, you're running a huge risk here," said Reed.
The DOW said the coyotes are turning up in neighborhoods and backyards, even in downtown Denver.
"Unfortunately, we are seeing coyotes pretty habituated to people," said Jennifer Churchill of the DOW.
Churchill said there is no easy fix. Agents can't kill coyotes in urban areas because of laws and can't relocate them because no one wants them.
The DOW plans to meet with local governments over the next few months to talk about possible solutions.
