ACLU Gets Details On Convention Protest Zone

DENVER (CBS4) ― Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union say the City of Denver has given them details of a public demonstration zone at the Democratic National Convention.

"We are glad to hear that the city is now willing to disclose at least some of the information we have been seeking and has now made a commitment to disclose the rest of that information by (June) 23rd," Mark Silverstein with the ACLU said.

The zone is to be in Lot A of the Pepsi Center, which is between a Conoco gas station and the Pepsi Center. It will be surrounded by fencing that is transparent in both sound and sight. The area will be 50,000 square feet. Farther out, a "soft perimeter" will permit pedestrian traffic, but no access by vehicles.

Denver city attorney David Fine said demonstrators will not be able to hand out leaflets to the delegates as they enter.

The ACLU representing numerous protest groups may challenge that site when it gets more details.

The terminus of the parade route for demonstrations is to be announced Thursday.
