Police May Expand Search For Human Bones
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Investigators have called in more help and plan to expand their search after more human bones were found along the Burlington Canal in Commerce City Wednesday. Police may search Barr Lake in Adams County Thursday for more evidence.
A fisherman found two bonds Monday and officers have recovered three more bones from the canal near 58th Avenue and York Street.
Police said the rest of the skeletal remains may have been hauled to Barr Lake by crews how dredged the canal last year and took away tons of sand.
"We're being told there's a stockpile out there, 100,000 cubic yards of sand out there, so there's a lot we need to look at to see is it realistic for us if we go out to Barr Lake and start this mass scale to find these items and we just don't know that right now," said Det. Mike Saunders of Commerce City Police on Wednesday.
Police said forensic investigators believe the bones belonged to an adult, probably a male.
If they are able to come up with a DNA profile, they plan to enter it in the state and national database to see if they can get a match.
At that time, the remains would be turned over to a forensic anthropologist with whom the police are working.
