CSU Faculty Pushes Domestic Partner Benefits
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ―
The Faculty Council at Colorado State University is asking the school's Board of Governors to approve benefits for the domestic partners of full-time exempt employees.
"We're talking about more that just competing for faculty, we're competing for our technicians in our research programs and our administrative assistants, so we're competing with Larimer County and private industry and other institutions that may be offering these kind of benefits as well," said Prof. Bob Jones, chair of the CSU Faculty Council.
The council voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to ask the Board of Governors to approve the benefits change.
A similar push 4 years ago was voted down by the board. At the time, its nine members were appointed by then Gov. Bill Owens, a Republican.
"We've had a change in the office of governor and so we've had considerable turnover in our board and we think that the political climate is different than it was 4 years ago," said Jones.
The board is expected to take up the issue sometime during the summer.
"We certainly will look at it very carefully and evaluate it like a business decision, looking at it, will it make us competitive and what are the expenses related to it, just like we do everything," said Doug Jones, chair of the CSU Board of Governors.
The Faculty Council chair said he expects only a small number of employees would take advantage of the domestic partner benefit. He added that it is still important to stop discrimination and remain competitive.
