The Denver Police Department's Cold Case Project has released information about a fugitive they are trying to locate.
Police said Samuel Lopez, 37, is wanted for murder in Denver.
Sonny Jackson with Denver police said on June 9, 1997, officers responded to a location in northwest Denver on a report of a shooting. While there, officers learned Lopez had shot and killed 30-year-old Federico Gutierrez in a crawl space within the home.
"While there, witnesses heard several gunshots. The suspect emerged from the crawlspace carrying a handgun. Officers located the victim deceased from apparent gunshot wounds inside the crawlspace," Jackson said in a prepared statement.
Lopez is described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds.
Jackson said police believe Lopez had fled to Mexico after the murder but he could be back in the Denver area.
Police warn that Lopez is considered dangerous and should not be approached.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fugitive Unit at (720) 913-6753 or call the dispatch center at (720) 913-2000. Remain anonymous and call Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-STOP (7867).
Denver police have begun a push to close cold cases by tracking down fugitives. Every week, detectives put out information on two cold cases in hopes the public can help them track down the suspects.
