Poll: Did it take too long for CU to vote on firing professor Ward Churchill?

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) ― University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill told the Daily Camera last Thursday in an e-mail that he expects to be fired Tuesday when the Board of Regents meets to vote on his fate.

Regents have not discussed their plans on how they'll vote Tuesday with each other for fear of those discussions becoming evidence in an expected lawsuit, the Camera reported. Sources also told the Camera the outcome of the vote didn't appear to be in doubt.

There are more than 1,000 pages of documents for regents to review in Churchill's academic misconduct case.

Churchill and his attorney called the investigations and upcoming hearing a charade.

"I expect to be fired," Churchill said in an e-mail to the Camera on Thursday. "That's been ordained since the outset. ... So, they're going to do what they've wanted to do all along. Then it's my turn."

CU President Hank Brown recommended in late May that Churchill be fired because of academic misconduct. A faculty panel recommended suspending Churchill without pay for one year and demoting the professor.

Tuesday's schedule of events starts with a public meeting of the regents at 8 a.m. at the University Memorial Center in Boulder. The board is expected to quickly go into a closed-door, executive session for 8 hours. During that time, the board will hear from Churchill's attorney, Brown, and members of faculty committees about how regents should vote.

Some time after 4 p.m., the board will meet again in a public hearing and vote. After that vote, Brown and other CU officials will hold a news conference.
