Users of energy saving compact fluorescent lights (CFL) can now recycle the used bulbs at any Ace Hardware store in Colorado.
The spiral shaped bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and are not supposed to go into the trash.
CFLs operate on 75 percent less energy and last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, according to Xcel Energy, which is co-sponsoring the new program along with the Colorado Department of Health and Environment.
Ace hopes to attract repeat customers by offering to recycle CFLs.
"What more natural place to recycle the CFL than the place where you're going to get the new one?" said Dan Gust, owner of two Ace Hardware Stores in Boulder County.
Gov. Bill Ritter and Tim Taylor, a top official with Xcel Energy, praised the new program as a way to encourage consumers to make more efficient energy choices with "hassle-free" recycling.
Ace is also accepting broken CFLs, but they must be sealed in a zip-lock bag.
