Some hockey players from Littleton were among those who got sick after a carbon monoxide leak Saturday night at the ice arena in Glen Ellyn, a suburb of Chicago.
Thirteen 15- and 16-year-old players with the Colorado Thunderbirds AAA hockey team were hospitalized.
"There was a flu bug going around some of these teams so we said, 'Okay, we'll get some fluids, something to eat, rest; because we've got another game at 7 p.m.,'" Thunderbirds head coach Angelo Ricci said.
Many complained of headaches, vomiting and dizziness. As it got worse, Ricci decided to visit the hospital thinking it wasn't the typical flu.
"We decided to take the kids to the hospital -- 13 kids and two staff members, myself and our manager didn't feel too well," Ricci said.
Team Illinois had another eight or nine players affected and one player began having seizures.
Nearly 30 other people in the arena were treated at the scene.
"They actually set up a triage and they treated 30 or 40 people at the rink right there," Ricci said.
Everyone was released from the hospital after several hours of oxygen treatments.
The Thunderbirds arrived back in Colorado on Monday.
It was one of the biggest tournaments of the year for the Thunderbirds -- an invitational that drew 300 hundred teams from around the country. The team was undefeated and going into the quarterfinals when the incident occurred. Ricci had to pull the team out of the tournament.
"We have to teach them life lessons and you know what? The number one thing is your health," Ricci said.
It's not clear where the carbon monoxide came from.
The Thunderbirds will be back in Chicago in the spring for nationals. They are ranked second in the country in their league.
Earlier this year carbon monoxide built up at an ice rink in Greeley. Players from Greeley and Arvada got sick. The rink later installed a new ventilation system.
