The fire department in Breckenridge is trying to get a license to run its own ambulances. The Summit County Ambulance Service is the only agency currently licensed to transport patients in the county.
The Red, White and Blue Fire Department already has two ambulances that it uses for medical calls. Those calls make up more than half of its runs.
"We found these vehicles save us quite a bit of money in our operating costs," said Chief Gary Green of Red, White and Blue Fire Department.
Firefighters are usually first on the scene of medical calls. They stabilize the patient, but then have to wait for Summit County ambulances. Those waits can sometimes be long if they're tied up on other calls.
The fire department said it can transport patients more quickly in some situations.
The county is worried about how to work out the final details.
"There is a concern about revenue," said Gary Martinez, the Summit County Manager. "Right now, the Summit County ambulance service is completely funded by the fees charged to people using the service and no tax dollars go into it."
The county service could be hurt by less revenue if it didn't respond to calls in Breckenridge.
There are also concerns about deciding who would get the calls in Breckenridge if there were two ambulance services.
