Boutique Beats Recession With Special Offers

DENVER (CBS4) ―
Small business is getting hit hard by the recession, but there are a few bright spots. One Denver businesswoman is relying on a strong customer base as well as some special summer offers to grow her business.
"We've actually been doing very well. I feel very blessed to be in the neighborhood that we're in," said Lisa Figlino, owner of Pine Creek Clothing Co.
Her boutique is located at the corner of Mississippi and South Gaylord. While the shop is small, it's beating the recession in a big way.
"We're up about 10-percent on the years, so I'm very happy about that," Figlino added.
She's happy that despite the recession, customers keep coming for her eclectic mix of New York and local fashions.
"I carry over 120 brands - everything from Fantastic Brighton accessories - to Pandora - to little known local designers. We have some eco-friendly bags that some moms make, some frames that a lady in Highlands Ranch makes so things from all over the world," Figlino added.
This summer she's been giving business a boost with promotions like "Mojito Mondays" and "Flip Flop Fridays", when all the flip flops are on sale.
"Just fun things that entice people to come in and spend money in the store," she said.
While this small business owner is attuned to the needs of her customers, she's also tuned into the community. She and her sister started a non-profit organization 4 years ago, called "My Sister's Closet". From the store they work together to meet the needs of children in the community.
"Basically, it's just to kinda cut the red tape out, when we see a child who needs something there's a one page form and we can access that," Figlino told CBS4.
So far they've helped 25 children, 5 families and a couple of teachers by providing money for very specific needs, like glasses or a refrigerator. Figlino feels it's that balance of getting and giving that keeps her so successful.
"We can sort of give back into the community that is giving us so much."
Lisa Figlino will be taking Pine Creek Clothing Co. on the road this fall. She'll set up a small boutique at
CampExperience, a networking weekend for women at Copper Mountain Resort. CampExperience runs September 15-17th.
