Snow Keeps Firefighters From Burning Home

By Jennifer McRae, CBS4 News Producer
BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) ― A home burned to the ground Friday morning in Boulder County after firefighters said they were slowed in their response because of a snow-packed road.

The fire started around 8:30 a.m. at a home located at 3955 Conifer Hill Road between Allenspark and Lyons.

Firemen could not get to the home because of a steep, long and winding dirt road leading to the house. It was covered with 2- to 3-foot drifts at the end of the road.

"It's an unimproved road. It's four miles back and it's very deep snow and it has not been plowed," said. Bill Reichardt, Allenspark Assistant Fire Chief. "So we could not get any of our big engines and tankers in the back."

Lyons, Allenspark and Indian Peak fire departments responded to the fire.

Firefighters used smaller, four-wheel drive trucks to reach the burning home.

Two people were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are unkown.

The home was a total loss.
