Black Hawk Betting On 24/7 Alcohol Service

BLACK HAWK, Colo. (CBS4) ― Colorado casinos have already expanded their hours and games this year, and now they're looking to expand another service.

The city of Black Hawk wants the casinos to be allowed to serve alcohol 24 hours a day.Currently, last call is at 2:00 a.m. just like at a regular bar or restaurant.

Casinos complain when the booze stops so does the gambling. State law does not allow alcohol service between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Black Hawk City Manager Michael Cogg said the city is behind the new initiative.

"Gaming has been good for Black Hawk. We work well at the casinos and we don't really see a problem with a 24/7 alcohol service," Cogg said.
Black Hawk wants to position itself as a destination resort. Big casinos now offer full service hotels. New drinking laws could encourage gamblers to stay overnight.

For some residents 24-hour alcohol service has them concerned about more drunk drivers, but but Cogg said the time of day does not really mean there will be more drivers drinking.

"Statistics really show at times that people drive drunk at 3:00 in the afternoon 8:00 at night, 4:00 in the morning , even 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning."

Some Black Hawk residents said they simply aren't willing to take the chance.

"There's too many accidents going on, I mean people drink and drive you know they don't really obey the law, and they can't always have check points," Black Hawk Resident Francesca Martinez said.

Nothing has been put together yet. It will be up to lawmakers at the capitol, and the issue won't be discussed until about 2011.

The Colorado Gaming Association told CBS4 it has not taken a stance on this issue. Right now, discussions within the gaming industry are very preliminary. The industry said it wants to study liquor regulations in other states before weighing in.
