Thousands of people were expected to take part in the Denver area's annual Bike to Work Day, leaving behind polluting, gas guzzling cars and SUVs.

As the cost of gas stays high, bicycle sales across the country are going up. It seems more and more people are making the switch to pedal power in hopes of saving money.
In a national survey, 75 percent of all shops said they were selling more bikes, with buyers citing high gas prices. Eighty-eight percent of shops said they were seeing a jump in service as people brought in old bikes for repair.
"We had a record increase, 25,000 people participated in Bike to Work Day and 10,000 of them were brand new," said Dan Grunig of Bicycle Colorado.
Grunig said a healthy state like Colorado could see this trend as a long term change.
"Once people get into the habit of bicycle commuting, regardless of gas prices, they're going to find that that is the best way to get around," he said.
On the sales floors of local bicycle shops, sales for specific types of bikes are up.
"A lot of the bikes that are designed for riding on the road, on the bike baths, kind of that crossover bike," said Ron Keifel of Wheat Ridge Cyclery. "We're still selling some mountain bikes, but that and some road bikes, but that whole category of that hybrid market has really increased a lot."
Keifel said the cyclery is selling more women's bikes than men's. High end bikes aren't moving as much these days, he said.
