Aurora Charter School Draws Names For Students
AURORA, Colo. (AP) ―
Hundreds of parents and their children attended an unusual lottery in Aurora Wednesday night. AXL Academy, a new charter school, held a drawing after overwhelming demand to get into the school which will feature same-sex classes.
The Kindergarten through 8th Grade academy said it is the second public school in Colorado to offer same-sex classes.
The Department of Education approved new regulations about a year ago to make it easier to separate the sexes after a growing body of evidence showed boys learn differently than girls.
"Every child learns by interests," said Carla Davis, a mother of twins at the drawing Wednesday night. "Hers is colorful papers. His is 'give me something to do, stack up, build up.'"
"It is about making sure classroom is focused on learning not on social relationships and about kids taking risks and pushing themselves," said Audra Philippon, AXL Academy Founder.
The academy is explicitly a college preparatory school. It requires students wear uniforms and learn two languages to graduate. The academy opens in the fall.
