Funeral For Volunteer Firefighter Draws Thousands

GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4) ― Firefighters from across the state honored a fallen comrade in Weld County on Thursday.

Capt. Shane Stewart of a small volunteer department near Greeley died in the line of duty last Saturday when his nearly new tanker-pumper rig rolled on the way to a call.

Stewart, 33, of Pierce, was headed to assist the victim of a medical emergency in nearby Ault.

At his funeral, which was led by fellow volunteer firefighter Rev. Erik Karas, firefighters saluted him one last time.

"Shane, you will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved you," Ault-Pierce Fire Chief Scott Wagner said.

Karas prayed that the firefighters at the ceremony could "continue to save lives, ease pain and mend the torn fabric of lives entrusted to our protection."

The procession to Eaton Cemetery included more than 100 emergency vehicles.

Stewart had been a member of the Ault Volunteer Fire Department for 3 years. His father and brother are also members of the department.
