Thieves In Weld Co. Try To Steal ATM

FIRESTONE, Colo. (CBS4) ― A thief or thieves in Weld County tried to get away with the cash stored inside an ATM, but they didnt bank on the machines tough, protective exterior. The thieves got away with nothing, but caused a lot of damage in the process.

It was 11 p.m. Oct. 18th when the Adams Bank and Trust manager responded to the bank's ATM alarm.

"It was a shocking moment for me," said Nicole Villani-Skaggs, manager of the Adams Bank and Trust. "The whole thing was on its side and mangled," he said.

The ATM had been uprooted by a 15-ton front loader. Someone had stolen the construction equipment keys from a nearby construction site.

"They actually took the front loader and drove up over the machine," said Villani-Skaggs.

The crooks then drove off with their treasure box, even though the Firestone Police Department is located right around the corner. The front loader left the bank parking lot, crossed the highway and ended up about a quarter-mile away at Milavek Lake in the town of Frederick. That is where this crime stalled out. The thieves couldnt crack open the safe inside the ATM, despite slamming it repeatedly against the rocks.

"The good thing about it is they were not successful in removing the money," said Dave Montgomery, Firestone Police Chief.

Montgomery said the thieves then ran off.

"There is bank security video, but it doesnt show much. Just the front loader, coming right at you," said Montgomery.

Contractor Mike Clark said it is easy to steal keys and figures the suspects were locals.

"They got liquored up on a Saturday night and wondered what to do next," said Clark.

The bank manager said it is a costly headache. The bank will have to wait until the end of December to get a new, customized ATM installed.

There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in Weld County. The Firestone Police Chief said this is the fourth ATM robbery in the past two months in Weld County. Suspects in the three other robberies were caught.
