Aspen Sees Reason For Optimism Despite Economy
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ―
Aspen Skiing Co. executives say the upscale Colorado resort isn't immune from major economic downturns, but they still see reasons to be optimistic about this season.
Resort vice president David Perry said this week that season pass sales are up, bookings are healthy for most of the season and Aspen has held on to most of its air service at a time when other resort towns are losing seats.
He says the dollar is also still low enough to make U.S. ski trips attractive to overseas visitors, although it has gained ground recently.
Perry says some indicators are a cause for concern: Bookings for the early and late parts of the season are low, and air travel is expensive, especially with additional fees for checking skis and bulky clothing.
