Crews Battle 3-Alarm Apt. Fire In Highlands Ranch
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4) ―
A three alarm fire at an apartment complex in Highlands Ranch Wednesday afternoon left nearly two dozen people out of their homes. No one was seriously injured.
Fire crews from Littleton and other areas were called to the Palomino Park Condominium Complex located at 6098 Blue Ridge Drive near Quebec and C-470.
Investigators said the fire likely started on a second story patio where they found a gas grill and small freezer. They aren't sure what caused the fire.
"Just the awe that it's 30 feet from my house and it wasn't my house, just scared me to death," said Bob Vodicka, one resident. "Makes me want to get my renter's insurance going again."
The affected building had eight units. All of them were evacuated even though the flames were contained to one unit.
"Rational starts leaking in and you're like 'oh my God. Pretty much everything is going to be ruined,'" said Anthony Tynan who lives underneath the unit where the fire started. "My insurance just ran out. We just moved over here so, so I'm an idiot."
Residents in other units had a chance to see their homes and grab a few things Wednesday evening.
A Disaster Action Team (DAT) from the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter in Denver responded to the fire to help firefighters and victims. They say eight units were affected and 21 people are displaced.
According to State Farm's Web site, $25,000 in renter's insurance costs about $125 per year. That's a little more than $10 a month.
